Abstract

113,344. Grant, A. A. March 6, 1917. Electrically - controlled fastenings. - Workmen's lockers in factories &c. are provided with fastenings controlled electrically from a distance. Each locker L is provided with a latch 11 and electro-magnet 19, which is connected through a battery B to a corresponding electromagnet 1 in the overseer's room, the electromagnet 1 being provided with push-pieces 9 numbered to correspond with the lockers. A workman desiring to use a locker hands his token to an attendant who presses the corresponding push-piece 9, thereby moving a spring contact 5 into engagement with the armature 4 and with a contact screw 8 and closing the circuit of the electro-magnets 1, 19; this circuit remains closed until the door of the locker is opened, the armature 4 of the electro-magnet 1 retaining the contact 5 in the displaced position. The striking- plate 13 and latch 11 are formed so that it is necessary for the workman to press the door slightly inwards before the electro-magnet 19 can lift the latch 11 and free the door; when the door is pulled open, a contact pin 17 mounted on it is withdrawn from between contacts 18, breaking the circuit of the electro-magnets. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 4, a spring-controlled contact pin 21 may be employed mounted in a casing 28. The latches of a number of doors may be freed simultaneously by means of a sliding or oscillating shutter provided with projecting pins adapted to operate the corresponding pressbuttons.
