LOCK-OPERATED CIRCUIT-CLOSER.
1,'388 -119 I Specification of'Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 16, 1921 'i pnatan. filed September is, 1919'. Serial no. 324,115.
To all whomet may concern: Fig. '2 illustrates the lock in locked posi-- Be it knownthat I, ZYGMUNT H. PEHEL, tionwith'akey inserted therein and rotated a citizen of Poland,'-and aresident of the in a manner to unlock said look. In this city of New York, borough of Manhattan, view the locked parts are shown in a posicounty of New York, and State of New tion which closes the circuit through the York, have invented a new andImproved burglar alarm system to ring the bell, and Lock-Operated Circuit-Closer; ofwhich the a key as shown inserted in the lock.
following is a full, clear, and exact descrip- A burglar alarm system and lock contion. Y structed in accordance with this invention 10 This invention relates to looks, and parcomprises a bolt actuated by a rack and ticularly to a burglar proof lock to' be used pinion. A key is used to actuate the pinion,

cation, and as portrayed in the accompany- A pawl 15 is carried on the pinion 12, 50 ing drawings, wherein: said pawl being pivoted on a screw or pm Figure 1 shows the lock, and a burglar 16 which is permanently mounted on the alarm such as a bell is shown in diagrampinion. The pawl acts to close or cover matic form connected'with the lock. This one of the keyreceptacles 13 in order to view illustrates the lock in normally locked prevent the wrong key from entering the 55 position with the burglar alarm quiescent. key receptacles and rotating the pinion 12.
The lower free and swinging extremity of the pawl 15 is angularly shaped or beveled. This beveled face of the pawl 15 corresponds to a bevel formed on the end of the key which matches the lock, and as the key is inserted the corresponding bevels of the key and pawl engage and cause the pawl 15 to rotate about its center 16 to permit the key to pass into the receptacles 13 in order to effect a turning movement of the pinion.
In order to subject the pawl to a positively normal closed position to cover one of the key receptacles, it is necessary to employ a device to restrain the pawl to a normal forward position. This device comprises a guide 16', in which is slidably mounted a plunger 17. The plunger is fitted with a spring interposed between a plunger head and a guide to throw the plunger forward against the pawl 15 and in engagement with the shoulder 14f which looks and prevents rotation of the pinionl 12. This action holds the pawl in a closed position over one of the key receptacles.
hen the proper key is inserted in the lock, the corresponding angular face of the key and the pawl will engage to cause the pawl 15 to be displaced thus allowing the key to enter the receptacles 13. In this way the key is engaged with the pinion, and the pinion may be rotated to move the bolt 7 rearwardly from extended and locked position.
A contact member 20 is fixed to the inside of the lock casing and insulated therefrom. An electric circuit line 21 connects with the contact member 20. The electric circuit 21 also connects with the metal casing of the lock or is grounded thereto, and the circuit includes in series therewith a battery or other source of current and an alarm 22. The contact member is formed of an upstanding plate slightly spaced from the pawl 15, and is in such a position as to be contacted by the pawl 15 whena key is inserted in the look which displaces the pawl 15.
A switch member or circuit closer element is associated with the lock to close a circuit and ring the alarm should a burglar attempt to jimmy the door by inserting a prying tool between the lock and the door facing.
This circuit closer comprises an upstanding contact member 23 fixed to the lock casing, and an upstanding contact member at. One of the contactors projects through a hole formed in the lock casing and normally remains spaced from the other contactor. The contactor 2 should be made of spring material to restrain it from engagement with the contactor 23. The contactor 23 is connected with the circuit 21 and insulated from the base while the contactor 24: is grounded on the base. In case a tool is inserted between the face of the lock and the door facing the contactor 24: would press against the member 23 thereby closing the circuit 21 and ring the alarm 22.
The alarm would also be sounded when a key is inserted in the lock to displace the pawl 15 as the said pawl would close the circuit 21 through the contact member 20. The alarm would be sounded in case the lock is tampered with, and would ring whether the reprehensible person used a key or a prying tool. I
This combination lock and alarm may be used to render a window or other opening burglar proof to the same good and effect as it operates in connection with a door.
The invention is presented to fulfil the need felt for a burglar proof alarm safety lock of this nature.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a lock operated circuit closer of the character described, including a lock bolt, a pinion operating the lock bolt, a pawl pivoted on said pinion, and an electric contact member near said pawl adapted to be engaged by the same upon the operation of said pinion by a key.
2. In a lock operated circuit closer of the character described, a pinion rotatably mounted in the lock casing, a pin mounted on said pinion, a pawl pivoted on said pin, an upstanding plate slightly spaced from said pawl and forming a contact member adapted to be engaged by said pawl upon the operation of said pinion by a key, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth,
ZYGMUNT H. PEHEL.
