Abstract

1,133,447. Sheathed type resistance heating elements. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 Feb., 1966 [4 Feb., 1965], No. 4999/65. Heading H5H. [Also in Division B3] A tubular sheathed heating element comprises at least two flat zig-zag heating wires 2 embedded in insulating material, e.g. magnesia, in a metal sheath 1 of generally rectangular crosssection with the planes of the heating wires substantially parallel to one another and to the longer sides of the rectangle. The ends of the wires are twisted back on themselves and welded at 11a to leads 11 passing through holes in a bush 12 of a fusible ceramic material. The wires may be of flattened cross-section. A method of making the element by a series of metal rolling and bending operations is described (see Division B3). The element may be formed into a flat spiral with the longer sides of the rectangle parallel to the plane of the spiral for use as a hot-plate, or with the longer sides perpendicular to the plane of the spiral for use as an air heater. Use as a grill element is also mentioned. Initial rapid heating may be obtained by series/parallel switching or by series or parallel connection of two wires having different temperature coefficients of resistance.
