Abstract

1,133,434. Boric oxide. UNITED STATES BORAX & CHEMICAL CORP. 10 Feb., 1966 [15 Feb., 1965], No. 5958/66. Heading C1A. Vitreous boric oxide is produced by heating an intimate mixture of sulphuric acid (of at least 78% concentration) and at least one borate selected from the alkali metal borates and alkaline earth metal borates (those of magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium) at 750-1090‹ C. to form a molten, two-layered, reaction product, removing one layer from the other while molten and cooling the separated layer containing the boric oxide. The reaction mixture is fed by screw conveyer 1 to a furnace heated by gas burners 2. The melt separates into two layers, the upper (boric oxide-containing) layer flowing over dam 7 and being further heated to remove gaseous impurities before being removed through opening 5 and fed to chilled roll coolers 12. The lower layer is removed at 4 and cooled between rollers 10 and 11. The borates exemplified are sodium and potassium tetraborates, sodium pentaborate and the hydrates thereof, also borate ores, e.g. colemanite (Ca 2 B 6 O 11 À5H 2 O), ulexite (NaCaB 5 O 9 À 8H 2 O).
