In a process for producing ethylene by cracking naphtha or a heavier hydrocarbon with subsequent oil-quenching of the products, the quench oil is a mixture of (a) tar produced in the cracking process and, as diluent, (b) a stable hydrocarbon fraction, the aliphatic components of which are predominantly saturated. The diluent is preferably highly aromatic and is typified by a phenol extract of a catalytic cycle stock.
