Abstract

1,132,979. Iron oxide; ammonium salts. KAWASKI STEEL CORP., and MEIWA CHEMICAL ENG. CO. Ltd. 30 Nov., 1965, No. 50830/65. Heading C1A. Ammonium salts (e.g. sulphate and chloride) and iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) are produced by oxidizing, using air or oxygen, and NO 2 gas as a catalyst, an aqueous solution of a ferrous salt (e.g. sulphate or chloride) containing a free acid (e.g. H 2 SO 4 or HCl) in a quantity corresponding to at least a half mol number of ferrous ions, to oxidize the ferrous iron to ferric iron, mixing the oxidized aqueous solution with a further quantity of the unoxidized ferrous salt starting solution to provide a mol ratio of ferrous salts to ferric salts of 1: 4-2: 3 respectively, neutralizing the mixed aqueous solution with ammonia gas to give a slurry containing ferroso-ferric oxide and an ammonium salt (e.g. sulphate or chloride) and then separating ferroso-ferric oxide from the ammonium salt solution by filtering the neutralized slurry and crystallizing from the filtrate. The nitrogen dioxide gas, preferably present in a mol ratio of at least <SP>1</SP>/ 30 th the amount of ferrous iron, may be manufactured from ammonia and air using a platinum or platinum-rhodium catalyst or by reacting sodium nitrite with sulphuric acid. Excess N0 2 from the oxidizing step together with nitrogen, unreacted oxygen and moisture from the oxidizing step may be absorbed into the aqueous solution before entering the oxidizer. The pH of the slurry is preferably adjusted to more than 7.0 in the neutralization step which may average more than two hours. Ammonia and steam produced in the neutralization step may be absorbed into the mixed solution before it enters the neutralizer. The slurry may be agitated for more than 30 minutes after neutralization.
