Abstract
1,132,813. Surgical device for withdrawal of liquid. LOWELL INDUSTRIES, Inc. 20 June, 1967 [20 July, 1966], No. 28318/67. Heading A5R. A liquid withdrawal device, intended to be used for removing blood from an incision during a surgical operation, comprises a hollow handle, a nose for application to the incision, means for connecting the handle to a source of suction, and a valve for controlling the amount of suction applied to the nose. In a first embodiment illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the device comprises a handle 1 on one end of which is formed an integral nose 2 and on the other end of which is threadably attached a cap 3 having a tubular projection 4 for connection to a tube 6 leading to vacuum-producing apparatus (not shown); the end 7 of the handle within the cap is closed except for an off-centre aperture 8 which is adapted to register with an off-centre aperture 9 formed in the cap, the two apertures constituting a valve which provides, on rotation of the cap relative to the handle, a fully open, partially open, partially closed or fully closed passageway between the vacuum-producing apparatus and the nose. In a second embodiment illustrated in Figure 5, the device comprises a handle 11 on one end of which is formed an integral nose 12 and on the other end of which is formed an integral tubular projection 14 for connection to a tube 16 leading to vacuum-producing apparatus (not shown); the junction 17 between the nose and the handle is resilient and bent so as to constitute a valve which provides, on straightening or on further bending the nose relative to the handle, a larger or a smaller passageway connecting the nose to the handle. For either embodiment, the device preferably is formed of a resilient plastics material, for example polypropylene or "vinylite" (registered Trade Mark).
