Abstract
1,132,808. Electro-plating. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Feb.22, 1967 [March 17, 1966], No.8513/67. Heading C7B. Samples of which at least the surface is electrically conductive are provided with an impervious composite coating by a method comprising electrodepositing thereon a first coating comprising at least one metal layer; heating said coating to a temperature and for a time sufficient to degas it; mechanically treating the sample to close the surface defects of the first coating; and electrodepositing thereon a second coating comprising at least one metal layer, at least one of said coatings being constituted by successive depositions of two layers of different metals. The heat-treatment step is preferably carried out under vacuum, e.g. at a pressure of less than 10<SP>-4</SP> mm Hg, and the mechanical treatment of the sample may comprise cold working, e.g. compression rolling or polishing. Following the mechanical treatment remaining defects in the coating may be filled with metal e. g. with indium, tin or zinc, e. g. by electrolytic spot deposition. The first and second coatings may each comprise successive layers of two different metals, the outer layer of the first coating and the inner layer of the second coating being formed of the same metal. The article thus formed may comprise a uranium base, the first coating comprising a layer of nickel followed by a layer of copper and the second coating comprising a layer of copper followed by a layer of nickel. The process may be used to coat fuel rods and other uranium parts produced for mechanical purposes.
