Abstract
1,132,500. Electroluminescence. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 4 May, 1967 [29 June, 1966], No. 29132/66. Heading C4S. [Also in Division H1] An electrical signal storing device comprises an electrical charge storing insulating layer 8, electroluminescent layer 3 separated by photoemissive layer 7, means, including for example conductors 2 and 4 which may be mutually orthogonal sets of conductors, actuable by signals to be stored for causing selected small portions of layer 3 to emit light which effects photoemission from corresponding portions of layer 7, the resultant depletion currents being utilized to produce signal representative charges on said insulation layer, which may be for example partially laterally conductive glass. The signals may be read off by a scanning cathode ray or by a similar arrangement to layers 1 to 7 but on the opposite side of layer 8, including photo-conductive layer 9 and electroluminescent layer 13 with grids 12 and 14. This pick up circuit may include facilities for "rewriting" the output signals into store. Layers 5 and 11 are transparent insulating spacers of glass for instance, layers 6 and 10, of light transparent metal sheets. Layers 3, 7, 9 and 13 are preferably of the dot-mosaic structure.
