Abstract

1,132,468. Air conditioning; contacting gases with liquids. LUWA A.G. 10 Dec., 1965 [11 Dec., 1964], No. 52614/65. Headings F4K and F4V. In an air conditioning system in which outside air is supplied to a room 1 through a duct 2 and stale air is withdrawn from the room through a duct 3, direct-contact water to air heat exchangers 4, 5 and 8, 9 are provided in ducts 2 and 3 respectively. In winter operation, the water circulated through heat exchangers 8, 9 picks up heat from the outgoing air and is passed through pipes 32, 30 and 29 to heat exchangers 5, 4 in which it is used to heat and humidify the incoming air. The water is returned from heat exchanger 4 through pipes 14, 17 and the degree of heating of the incoming air may be varied by by-passing a desired proportion of the returning water around heat exchangers 8, 9 through conduit 33 under the control of valve 20. The latter is responsive to a thermal element 39 in duet 2. For summer operation the water for heat exchangers 4, 5 is circulated in a closed path (viz. pipes 14, 24, 27 and 29) which includes the evaporator 23 of a refrigeration system while the water for heat exchangers 8, 9 circulates in a separate closed path (viz. pipes 32, 35, 19 and 40) which includes the condenser 36 of the refrigeration system. Thus, the water in heat exchangers 4, 5 cools and de-humidifies the incoming air and the water cooled by the outgoing air in heat exchangers 8, 9 is used to cool said condenser. A valve 22 controlled by a thermal element 38 in duct 2 controls the amount of water by-passing the evaporator 23 through pipe 21, 25 to regulate the degree of cooling of the incoming air. A filter 12, auxiliary heater 13 and fan 7 are provided in duct 2 and a fan 11 is provided in duct 3. Quick-contact heat exchangers.-Each heat exchanger may comprise a casing 50, Fig. 2, a packing 54, a header 55 for supplying water to the packing, and a drain 57. Air passes through the packing into the casing and is withdrawn therefrom through a duct 53.
