Abstract

In a hydrodynamic torque-converter having an impeller 14, a complementary similar turbine (15), Fig. 1, not shown, and a reactor (16) near the rotational axis A between the impeller and turbine, the axial width of both outer and inner walls 31, 32 of the toroidal flow path is less than their radial height and the outer and inner walls are formed respectively by arcuate portions BD, EC; bd, ec, joined by straight radial portions DE, de, of which the straight radial outer portion DE is longer than the inner de and its centre is nearer to the rotational axis than that of the inner. The specification defines in detail dimensional parameters of the toroidal flow path, and in Fig. 1 (not shown), the turbine drives the output shaft through a separating clutch arranged between the turbine and the input flywheel. This clutch comprises an output friction disc clamped between a pair of plates by surrounding fluid pressure in the converter casing, and released by fluid pressure supplied internally between the plates.
