Abstract

1,131,295. Steering vehicles. STATNI VYZKUMNY USTAV MATERIALU. 23 Jan., 1967 [27 May, 1966], No. 3303/67. Heading B7H. [Also in Division H5] In the radiographic examination of pipe-line welds, a radio-source in a container 4 is introduced into a pipe-line 1 on a self propelled carriage comprising a frame 8, a pair of driving wheels 6 driven by an electric motor through a gear-box 5 which enables the carriage to move both forwards and backwards, and a steerable wheel 10, this wheel is steered by a device 9 which responds to a rotation of the carriage about its longitudinal axis or an imaginary line parallel thereto said rotation being caused by a deviation of the carriage from its desired path along the pipe-line, by turning the wheel 10 to correct such deviation and restore the carriage to its desired path. The device 9 preferably comprises a pendulum suspended from the frame which pendulum may be coupled to the steerable wheel 10 through gearing, or the displacement of the pendulum may operate the contacts on a servomotor which then adjusts the wheel 10 accordingly. The weight of the pendulum is preferably the accumulator battery which provides the power. The carriage is provided with a relay operated automatic control system which operates the desired radiographic programme using the power source 7 and the said radio-active source in container 4.
