Abstract

A power steering system for a vehicle employs the starter motor also as the electric motor for bringing into engagement the auxiliary drive for the steering column. The steering column incorporates a necked portion, enclosed by an open end sleeve, and a pair of blades locate in slots in the sleeve, to indicate the torsion in the steering column during steering. This torsion and its direction are converted into signals fed to an electronic control circuit and the control signals from the circuit are used to actuate a clutch at the output of the starter motor interconnected with another clutch at the gearing located on the steering axle. Thus the starter motor brings into action the auxiliary drive, controlled by the electronic unit each time the steering wheel is turned.
