Abstract

1,131,070. Blowing lances. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 21 Dec., 1965 [24 Dec., 1964(3)], No. 54005/65. Heading F4B. A metallurgical lance 10 has longitudinal cooling fluid inlet and outlet passages 32, 50, interconnected by a cooling chamber 26 formed in the tip 112 of the lance, and a longitudinal oxygen gas passage 30 with outlet means in the form of hollow posts 124 extending across the cooling chamber from the end of the gas passage to the lance tip end wall 14. The posts are inclined upwardly and inwardly and are integral with an annular flange 138 extending transversely from the side wall 16 of the tip 112. Cooling fluid leaves the chamber 26 through arcuate slots 156 in the flange 138 adjacent the outer sides of the posts 124. In a modification, (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), the lower concave chamber surface 20 is provided with ridges extending radially from a central peak to guide the cooling fluid between the hollow posts, the ends of the ridges all curving in the same clock direction and cooperating with cusps formed on the hollow posts to guide the cooling fluid. The ridges may be replaced by sets of parallel plates extending in the desired direction of flow of coolant. In a further modification, (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), having three hollow posts, oxygen enters by a central passage surrounded in turn by cooling fluid inlet and outlet passages respectively. The cooling fluid is guided radially outwardly by curved guide vanes extending between the hollow posts after being directed radially inwardly by horizontal plate segments mounted on top of the guide vanes, three cusps formed centrally on the inner end face of the tip together with cusps formed on the hollow posts, which co-operate with protrusions on the inner annular tip wall, serving to guide the cooling fluid.
