Abstract

113,106. Wallace, C. F., and Tiernan, M. F. Nov. 14, 1916. Fluid-actuated valves; lift valves.-In treating liquids with gases, and particularly in purifying water with chlorine, the rate of flow of the gas into the liquid is controlled by maintaining automatically a constant drop in its pressure across an adjustable resistance independently of variations in the static pressure. Gas is fed from cylinders through a pipe 13, a meter 23 as described in Specification 113,197, and a pipe 35, and passes a control valve 15 across which a constant drop in pressure is maintained automatically by a device 14, Figs. 1 and 4. This comprises a casing divided into two chambers 18, 21 by a diaphragm 19 acted upon by a spring 22 which determines a drop in pressure. The chambers 18, 21 are connected to a pipe 13 upon opposite sides of the valve 15 by a valve 17 and a pipe 16 respectively, the valve 17 being controlled by the diaphragm 19 and the spring 22. The adjustable resistance is provided by a needle valve 50, Fig. 6, having a screw-threaded engagement in an operating. sleeve 57 which, by a screw thread of opposite hand, engages in a gland nut 55. Thus when the sleeve 57 is turned a fine differential adjustment of the valve is obtained.
