[Also in Division D1] A composition suitable for use in the treatment of cellulosic fabrics comprises an aqueous alkaline dispersion containing at least 1% by weight of (1) divinyl sulphone, in which Z is -SSO 3 M, -OSO 3 M, a quaternary ammonium salt residue attached to the CH 2 CH 2 group through carbon-nitrogen bonds or OR<SP>1</SP> groups in which M is a cation, e.g. sodium, potassium, ammonium or caesium, R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom, an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing 1-8 carbon atoms or an acyl radical derived from an aliphatic carboxylic acid containing 1-8 carbon atoms in the aliphatic portion, R is a divalent hydrocarbon radical, any valency of the N of the NR n N group not satisfied by R groups and the CH 2 CH 2 group being satisfied by monovalent hydrocarbon radicals, n is 1 or 2 and X is a divalent hydrocarbon radical or divalent radical attached to the S by a CS linkage and being composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms in the form of ether linkages and at least 0À5% by weight of (2) an alkali metal salt of an aliphatic hydrocarbon siliconate having an average of 0À9 to 1À3 hydrocarbon radicals per silicon atoms, the hydrocarbon radicals having 1-4 carbon atoms. When Z is a quaternary ammonium salt residue this may be derived from pyridine hydrochloride, quinoline hydrochloride, trimethylamine, ethyl dimethylamine, benzyldimethylamine or allyl diethylamine. The component (2) may be a methyl, ethyl, vinyl, allyl, propyl, isopropyl or butyl siliconate and the alkali metal may be lithium, sodium, potassium or caesium. The composition may be rendered alkaline by the addition of sodium hydroxide or potassium carbonate.
