Abstract

1,131,030. Electroless nickel coating. KNAPSACK A. G. July 24, 1967 [Aug. 6, 1966], No. 33958/67. Heading C7F. Non-metallic articles such as plastics and glass are electrolessly Ni coated in a process comprising cleaning the articles by mechanical and/or chemical treatment, activating with an aqueous solution of a palladium salt and then coating in a pre-heated bath at 30‹ - 70‹C., the bath containing Ni and hypophosphite ions, nitrils - trismethylenephosphonic acid and a buffer at a pH of 3-9. The concentration of hypophosphite ions is 0.25-1 mol/ litre, the molar ratio of Ni to hypophosphite ions is 0.2-1.6, and the molar ratio of Ni ions to nitrilstrismethylene-phosphonic acid is 0.7-2. The buffer is formed of 0.02 -1 mol Na 2 HPO 4 6H 2 O and 0À002- 0.01 mol KH 2 PO 4 per litre of bath solution and the pH is ajusted with NaOH. A stabilizer such as 2 mgms/litre of lead sulphide or lead acetate may also be added. The Ni deposit contains 5-15% phosphorus. The articles coated may be glass, polypropylene. BAKELITE (Trade Mark) and plastics obtained by graft polymerization of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene.
