Abstract

1,130,747. Refrigerating. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 7 Sept., 1965 [10 Sept., 1964], No. 38162/65. Heading F4H. [Also in Division F1] A thermodynamic engine comprises a piston 3 and a displacer 2 arranged coaxially with the piston and a drive mechanism comprising two identical cranks 26 which are located one on each side of a plane containing the axis of the piston and displacer and which form parts of two parallel crankshafts which are arranged to rotate synchronously and substantially in phase and in opposite directions and which lie one on each side of the plane, the piston and the displacer having a piston-rod 19 and a displacer rod 23 respectively which are each connected to the two cranks by piston connecting rods of substantially equal length and displacer connecting rods of substantially equal length respectively one end of each connecting rod being connected to a yoke 20 which is connected to the piston-rod and one end of each displacer connecting rod being connected to a further yoke 33 which is connected to the displacer rod which yokes are located one on each side of the plane containing the axes of the crankshafts. The invention is stated to be applicable to a cold gas refrigerator or a heat pump. It is described applied to a hot gas engine. The connection between at least one of the yokes and the associated piston-rod or displacer rod comprises a pivotal connection the axis of which is parallel with the axes of the crankshafts. In one embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a pivot-pin 45 has a transverse bore 46 through which the end of the piston-rod 19 passes. The pivot-pin is secured to the end of the piston-rod by a nut 47. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the piston-rod 19 has an enlarged end formed with a transverse bore 52 in which a pivot-pin 53 is rotatably supported. The ends of the pin 53 project from the bore 52 and are fixed for example by shrinking in bores in the links 51. A lubricating system for the pivotal connection between the piston-rod and the piston yoke is also described.
