Abstract
1,130,741. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 24 Jan., 1966 [29 Jan., 1965], No. 3980/65. Heading F2E. In a disc brake of the floating caliper type the directly actuated pad 26 is applied by a piston 20 upon supplying fluid via a flexible connection to cylinder chamber 18 which is formed in a lever 10 pivoted on a pin 14, a nose 28 of the lever being positioned such that in the normal direction of rotation of the disc the drag force on the pad 26, which is allowed some circumferential movement, is transmitted to it so that both the reaction of the cylinder and, in addition, a self-servo effect act via the nose 28 on the pad 26 to provide an increased application force. The increased force is also transmitted to the other pad 32 via the pivot 14 and the floating housing. The latter includes a recess 12 to accommodate the lever and also a pad assembly comprising the pad 26, its backing plate 24, and a further mounting plate 34 which is provided with an abutment 30 to engage the nose 28. Studs interconnect the plates 24 and 34 whereby a gap 36 is maintained between them to insulate plate 34 from the heat generated by the pad 26, and to assist cooling. Wear compensation may be effected either manually, as shown, by rotating a bush 46 which has a screw-threaded connection with a plunger 44 whose upper end supports the pivot pin 14 via a yoke member 40, or may be effected automatically by a modification of this arrangement whereby the bush is fixed and the plunger is rotatable and carries a ratchet wheel with which a pawl, carried by the lever 10, co-operates. 52 is a locking screw for the bush in the arrangement shown. Boots 38 prevent ingress of dirt &c.
