Abstract

[Also in Division C3] In a reaction system comprising at least two closed circuits round which liquids may be passed, the reaction mixture is circulated in said circuits, the circulations are interrupted, and mixture is passed from the first to the second circuit and removed from the second circuit. The process is described in relation to phenol-formaldehyde resin formation and as shown in Fig. 3, the apparatus may comprise three circuits, preheater circuit comprising pump 124, heat exchanger tank 122 and valve 130; reaction circuit comprising pump 136, heat exchanger 138 and valve 134 and cooling circuit comprising pump 144, tank 142 heat exchanger 148 and discharge/circulation valve 146. The valves are operated together by a discharge weighing arrangement 150-164 under the over-riding control of timer 166 whereby when a predetermined amount of product is discharged, the circuits are switched from circulation to transfer. The reactants are fed by means of pump 110 to tank 112 having probes 116 and 118 which respectively de-energise and energise the pump via controller 114: if the pump is a constant rate positive displacement pump, 114 can operate as the time controller. A device to measure pH, specific gravity, viscosity or other property dependant upon elapsed time may be alternatively used as the timer. The volume of material passed from stage to stage may be the same as, or more or less than the volume of the circuits. Catalyst may be introduced at each reaction stage or with the feed in the first circuit.
