Grates; ash-pits.-In a gas-producer which is divided at or about the position of the grate or blast distributor into distinct areas each provided with one or more pairs of clinker-crushing rollers, the rollers are independently movable. whether the movement of each pair is variable or not. In the arrangement shown as applied to a circular producer, there are four such areas of quadrantal form, each with a single pair of crushing-rollers d, e, h, k, respectively beneath, and parallel to, the lower edges of a diametral grate b of inverted-V form. Each pair of rollers is independently operated by worm gearing, the worm shafts being driven by adjustable ratchet gearing from a central shaft o. The transverse dividing member c forms a cover for the inner bearings of the roller shafts. Waterseal ash-pits are provided, consisting of two parallel channels of V form, ashes being removed therefrom into a main channel, with which the ashpits of several producers communicate, by means of water jets delivered by pipes v. The ash-pit channels preferably slope towards the main conduit. Similar jets may be employed in the main channel, at the end of which a travelling bucket system may be arranged for the final removal of the ashes. The rollers are in contact with the water in the ash-pits.
