1,130,016. Setting apparatus. W.A. TUPLIN. May 26,1966 No.23521/66. Heading G1M. In apparatus for setting the position of a measuring head 3 and stylus 1 attached to a plate 4, the plate 4 is set in a number of positions relative to a further plate 7 through inter-engagement of a grooved member 13 attached to plate 4 with spheres 10 mounted on plate 7, the plate 4 being slideable in Y - Y<SP>1</SP> direction through engagement of balls 5 with a groove 6 in the plate 7. The member 13 is clamped at the required orientation to plate 4 by an adjustable clamp 15 movable along slot 16 in the plate 4. The spheres 10 are carried by a holder 11, the angular position of the holder 11 being determined with respect to the line Y - Y<SP>1</SP> by pins 8 slidable in slots 12, the sphere being retained in the holder by further clamping means 19. Thus, in use, by choosing the size of the spheres 10 and orientation of member 13 with respect to line YY', the size of the steps of movement of plate 4, and hence of the measuring head 3, may be predetermined.
