Abstract

1,129,737. Controlling change-speed gears. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 12 April, 1967, No. 16673/67. Heading F2D. Pneumatic shift mechanism for a vehicle change-speed gear comprises a selector shaft 11 movable angularly and axially by respective pairs of double-acting pneumatic jacks. Three axial positions are obtained using jacks 22, 23 parallel to the shaft 11, their piston rods 18, 19 being pivoted to opposite ends of a floating lever 15 carrying a pin 14 which engages a grooved collar 12 secured to the shaft 11, respectively with both jacks contracted, with one contracted and one expanded, and with both expanded. For angular movement, two jacks 35, 37 are used in series, the piston rod 38 of jack 37 having a fixed pivot 39 and the piston rod 32 of jack 35 being pivoted to a lever 28 keyed to shaft 11 but axially slidable thereon. Two equal stroke jacks 35, 37 give three angular positions (Fig. 3, not shown) or two jacks with different strokes (51, 52) (Fig. 4, not shown), give four angular positions.
