Abstract

1,129,408. Coated glass. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 10 May, 1966 [26 May, 1965], No. 20549/66. Headings B2E and B2K. [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] Glass fabrics or sheets are bonded to rubber by applying thereto an adhesive composition consisting at least in part of an aqueous dispersion or emulsion of a polyisocyanate, the isocyanate groups of which may be masked by, for example, reaction with a phenol, bisulphite or malonic ester, and a rubber latex, drying the applied coating, bringing the coated surface into contact with a vulcanisable rubber composition and vulcanising the rubber composition. Suitable polyisocyanates are 4, 4', 4"-triphenyl methane triisocyanate and the product of reacting one mole of triol with three moles of toluylene-2, 4-diisocyanate and the rubber latex in the adhesive composition which may be same as or different from the rubber in the rubber composition to which the glass material is to be bonded, may be natural rubber, a styrene-butadiene-vinylpyridine terpolymer, a styrene-butadiene copolymer, cis-polybutadiene, polychloroprene, a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, a butyl rubber or an ethylene-propylene copolymer or a mixture thereof. The adhesive composition may also contain a polyepoxide composition, e.g. epoxidised polybutadiene and the diglycidyl ether of 'bis phenol A and its condensation products, a protective colloid, e.g. an ammoniacal casin solution, para formaldehyde and/or a phenol-aldehyde resin, e.g. a precondensed resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, which may be accompanied by a aqueous mixture of ammonia and formaldehyde, and the dispersion or emulsion of the composition may be aided by use of an anionic or non- ionic emulsifying agent, e.g. dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate or a polyethylene oxide or polyvinyl ether emulsifier. The rubber in the vulcanisable rubber composition may be oilextended and the composition may contain sulphur, a peroxide cure system, carbon black, stearic acid, zinc oxide, N-cydohexylibenzthiazyl sulphonamide, phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine, mercaptobenzthiazyl disulphide, di-otolyl guanidine, magnesium oxide, tetramethylthiuram monosulphide and a triazine derivative.
