Abstract
1,129,228. Polymers of divinyl carbonates. AIR REDUCTION CO. Inc. 1 Nov., 1967 [1 Nov., 1966], No. 49717/67. Heading C3P. A polymer of a divinyl carbonate of general formula wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 , which may be the same or different, are hydrogen, alkyl with up to 20 carbon atoms or aryl may be prepared by polymerizing the monomer at between - 40‹ C. and 150‹ C. in the presence of a free-radical catalyst. The preferred monomers are divinyl carbonate and diisopropenyl carbonate. Preferred catalysts are organic peroxides e.g. benzoyl peroxide and azo compounds e.g. azobis-isobutyronitrile. The polymerization may be carried out in solution in an inert solvent e.g. benzene, acetone, dimethyl acetamide or tetrahydrofuran. In Example VI the polymerization tube is irradiated with ultra-violet light. In Examples IX and X polydivinyl carbonate is saponified with sodium methoxide to give polyvinyl alcohol as disclosed in Specification 1,129,230.
