Abstract
1,129,024. Measuring acceleration. NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION Inc. 17 Aug., 1966 No. 36887/66. Heading G4H. In apparatus for digitally measuring acceleration, an inertial mass 16 displaced in accordance with an applied acceleration moves a wiper arm 17 along a resistance 21 to provide a variable input signal to an amplifier 33, the output signal from which is fed to a capacitor 35 to charge it in a direction depending on the polarity of the signal, threshold devices 41, 43 enabling either positive or negative pulse generators 42, 44 when the charge on the capacitor 35 reaches a predetermined level to feed an output pulse to terminal 50, this pulse also discharging the capacitor 35. Whilst the capacitor is charging in response to the input signal, a D.C. current is applied to the coil 14 of an electromagnet 13, the induced electromagnetic force moving a bar 11 on which the mass 16 and wiper arm 17 are carried to move the wiper arm towards its equilibrium position. Output pulses, the frequency and number of which represent the magnitude of the acceleration and velocity respectively of the mass 16 and the amplitude of which represents the direction of acceleration, are applied to terminal 50 until the wiper arm is returned to its central position.
