A microwave impedance-transformer comprises a length of waveguide 1 containing a tapered element, e.g. a ramp 3, and a plurality of impedance-adjusting elements, e.g. probes 4, arranged behind the tapered element. As shown, the impedance of the waveguide is matched to that of a non-linear element 2 such as a thermistor or barreter. It is stated in the Specification that the impedance-changing element may have a number of discontinuities whose reflection coefficients are determined by the coefficients of a number of Tschebyscheff polynomials equal to the number of adjusted elements. It is stated that the latter may be irises.
