Abstract

1,128,496. Calcium silicate moulds. BATTELLE-INSTITUT e.V. 19 Jan., 1967, No. 2929/67. Heading B5A. A mould for plastic and castable ceramic material, e.g. clay, is made of porous hydrated calcium silicate with CaO : SiO 2 molar ratio of 0À1-1À0 : 1 and up to 35% (wt.) of plaster and may be covered with a jacket of plaster. The mould is made by casting a lime-silica-plaster water mixture which may contain additives to control the pore size, e.g. materials which develop gases or foams and setting regulators such as sugar or molasses, around a pattern and allowing the mixture to set. Further hardening at temperatures above 165‹ C. (preferably 180-210‹ C.) is then carried out for a time such that the product, time x vapour pressure of water is at least 65 atmospheres (gauge) hours. A metal inlay may be embedded in the mould to strengthen it.
