Abstract
1,128,442. Blind riveting. G.K.N. SCREWS & FASTENERS Ltd. 22 Nov., 1965 [3 Oct., 1964; 17 June, 1965], Nos. 40376/64 and 25636/65. Heading B3U. In a method of riveting using tubular rivet assemblies 32 the head 13 of the mandrel 31 is provided with aperturing means which enable it to pierce a hole in the workpiece prior to inserting the rivet. The head has a point 14 and is moved forwards sharply to pierce a hole in one of two sheets 16, 17, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) which are to be joined. The rivet then moves into the pierced hole and is held there whilst the mandrel is drawn back and the rivet set in the conventional manner. A tool for carrying out the method comprises a pair of jaws 35 which grip the mandrel 31 and an abutment 36 which bears on the end of the mandrel. Compressed air is first admitted to both of two chambers 50, 41 and the pressure acts on both sides of a free piston 39. To drive the rivet forward air pressure in the chamber 50 is released and air pressure acting on the piston within the area of a sealing lip 44 moves the piston slightly rightwards allowing the air pressure to act on the whole left-hand side of the piston which then slides rapidly along a spindle 26 and strikes a shoulder 27 driving the rivet smoothly forwards to pierce the workpiece. To retract the mandrel and set the rivet air is admitted to the chamber 50 and exhausted from the chamber 41. A perforated piston 55 entering a chamber 41 acts as a dashpot to retard the last part of the return stroke of the spindle 26.
