Abstract
1,128,183. Purifying rare gases. SOC. ANON L'AIR LIQUIDE POUR L'ETUDE ET SEXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE. 28 Oct., 1965 [28 Oct., 1964], No. 45764/65. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions G1 and H5] To eliminate hydrocarbon gaseous impurity or water vapour in a rare gas, the gas with oxygen or water added is passed through a H.F. field causing dissociation of the impurity into hydrogen and carbon, the latter then combines with oxygen to form CO 2 , added water first dissociating to form oxygen. Apparatus comprises a straight or U-shaped silica tube 2 about which two Fe, Cr helices 11, 12 are wound. The helices are connected to a H.F. generator 14 to form external electrodes for a discharge in the tube. To fix the impurity the tube may contain sintered glass particles or dehydrated inorganic zeolite. Oxygen or water is introduced through pipe 18 into krypton or xenon flowing through pipe 20 to the U-tube 2. The gas from tube 2 containing O 2 , CO 2 and H 2 is passed over activated alumina 24 to absorb CO 2 , over heated Cu or CuO to oxidize H 2 to form water vapour and to fix excess O 2 and then through a drier 28 to form water vapour.
