Abstract

1,128,066. Controlling reactors. SKODA NARODNI PODNIK. 3 Jan., 1966 [3 Jan; 1965], No.188/662. Heading G6C. The controlsystem of a liquid-moderated nuclear reactor comprises neutron-absorption elements which.. may be either in the form of grids or plates with apertures mounted at right angles to the longitudinal axes of the fuelelements, being immersed inthe moderator and movable in the direction of the longitudinal axes of the fuel elements by drive means, the thickness of eachelement being smaller than the length of the fuel elements. This system avoids interference with the neutron flux distribution in the plane of the radii of the reactor core and replaces the same by variations in the level of the neutron flux, and these variations can be utilized to give a more uniform neutron flux along the core height, given a symmetrical arrangement of the absorption elements; if the latter are arranged unsymmetrically, a maximum value for the neutron flux can be located at the place of entry of the colder coolant so as to enable theinlet temperature of the coolant to be increased which results in an increase in the output and efficiency of the plant while the surface temperature of the fuel elements is. maintained. The system is particularly suitable for powerful heavy watermoderated reactors.
