Abstract

[Also in Division H1] In a strip transmission line formed of three parallel, opposed dielectric sheets, metal coating on the inner surfaces of the two outer sheets forming the ground planes, and metal strips on either side of the centre sheet forming the centre conductor, the sheets are spaced from one another by layers of dielectric filling material bonded to the sheets and spaced laterally from the edges of the strips such that the field in the material does not exceed a predetermined value. As shown, two lines in parallel have central copper strips 6, 7, 6a, 7a formed on sheet 3 of epoxy material, and spaced from copper-clad fibreglass sheets 1 and 2 by the nylon impregnated fibreglass honeycomb material 8, 9. Radiating slots 10, 10a in the metal coatings constituting the ground planes form an antenna array; if the slots are formed in only one ground plane, metal foils stretching between the ground planes through breaks in the centre sheet 3 and filling material, on either side of the centre conductor, are provided, to suppress spurious modes produced by the asymmetrical line loading. The exposed ends of the structure may be shielded and sealed by conductive mesh with fibreglass and epoxy resin, the holes 15 formed throughout the honeycomb filling material 8, 9 permitting pressurization of the structure.
