[Also in Divisions A4 and B3] A method of producing sonic or ultrasonic energy or heat at a surface, e.g. for cleaning purposes, comprises directing at the surface a jet of liquid having incorporated therein a beam of radiant energy which strikes the surface at substantially the same place as does the jet of liquid and there produces sonic or ultrasonic energy or heat. The liquid may be water and the radiant energy may be light, e.g. laser light, which may be modulated and in the form of a parallel beam or focused to produce several spaced focal points or zones within the liquid jet. Solid particles may be added to the liquid to increase the mechanical and heating effects produced by the beam of radiant energy.
