Abstract

1,127,366. Connecting branches; valves. WALTER SLINGSBY & CO. Ltd. 7 Nov., 1966 [8 Nov., 1965], No. 47177/65. Headings F2G and F2V. A device for testing service pipes leading from gas mains comprises a plug adaptor 4 inserted into the service pipe coupling 3, a sealing plug 7 carried by mounting means 5, 6 which pass through the adaptor and enable the plug to be moved to seal off the flow of gas through the coupling, at least one air passage 11, 10, 12 then connecting the interior of the coupling and a test rig 9 which can be associated with the said plug adaptor or mounting means, the sealing plug 7 being movable from its inward gas sealing position to a withdrawn adaptor air passage sealing position. The device is left permanently in the withdrawn position after the test rig has been withdrawn, a resilient waterproof cover (20, Fig. 2, not shown), being then provided for parts 1 and 6. The threaded rod 5 and sleeve 6 have shaped ends 14, 17 to permit their relative rotation to compress the plug 7 axially to expand it for sealing purposes. In a modified construction the stem 5 may be in screwthreaded relationship with the adaptor 4 and the air passage may be provided by a flat or groove on the stem or a passageway therethrough. The sleeve and/or rod may be made so that a part or parts may be disconnected to shorten the exposed part left in the ground.
