Abstract

1,127,191. Taking up slack in flexible elements. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 Oct., 1965 [30 Oct., 1964], No. 44356/64. Heading B8B. A flexible element coupling comprises relatively rotatable inner and outer drums 1, 2 separated by an annular space and interconnected by the flexible elements e.g. electric cables or fluid power lines C1 C2, C3, &c. each of which is resiliently anchored to the outer drum 2 at one part and is wrapped around the inner drum 1 at another part, the intermediate part of each cable forming a bight in the annular space. The arrangement is such that relative rotation of the two drums transfers a length of cable either from the periphery of the inner drum 1 to the bight or from the bight to the periphery of the inner drum. The path of the bight of each cable is determined by rollers 7, 8, 9, 10 mounted on a carrier 11 which rotates co-axially with the drums. The roller carrier is driven through epi-cyclic gearing and ratchet operated slipping clutches by the drums at such a velocity that the cable bights are always tensioned independent of direction of rotation. The cables pass between the two drums at different positions along the rotational axis thereof. In the modification of Fig. 6 (not shown), the inner drum is finned and each cable is coiled around the drum between its particular pair of fins.
