Abstract
1,126,985. Automatic control of reeling. O.C. SELDEN. Jan. 21, 1966. No.2858/66. Heading G3R. Changes in the length of a loop of tape in a winding or unwinding system operate a changeover switch to determine whether A. C. is supplied directly, or indirectly through a transformer and rectifier, to a shaded pole electric motor driving the supply or take-up reel so that the reel is driven or braked as necessary to maintain the length of the loop constant. As described, tape fed from a reel driven by the motor is formed into a loop before passing to a recorder or reader. If the length of the loop increases to a predetermined value, a pulley rinding at the bottom of the loop operates a changeover switch to replace the A. C. supply to the motor by a D. C. supply so that the reel is braked and loop length restored within tolerance. The D. C. supply is obtained from the A. C. supply through a step-down transformer and bridge rectifier. A similar system for controlling tape being wound on a reel is described.
