[Also in Division D1] A composition used in the treatment of shaped articles made from an essentially linear crystallizable polyester comprises a water-insoluble crystallizable polymeric compound which contains within a single molecule (a) sufficient repeat units identical with those forming the crystallizable portions of the polyester material treated to confer crystallizability on the compound and (b) a polyoxyalkylene group which modifies the surface of the articles treated, and has a melting-point above 100‹ C. as measured by the temperature of disappearance of bi-. refringence, and a poly(hydroxyphenyl) alkane containing two or more hydroxyphenyl groups which may be the same or different joined to a common alkane residue, as antioxidant. The poly(hydroxyphenyl) alkane may be bis-(4- hydroxyphenyl) methane, 2,2<SP>1</SP>-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, 1,1<SP>1</SP> - bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) ethane, bis - (4 - hydroxy - 2 - t - butyl - 6 - methylphenyl) methane, bis - (2 - hydroxy - 3 - cyclohexyl - 5 - methylphenyl) methane, 1,1 - bis - (2 - methyl - 4 - hydroxy - 5 - t - butylphenyl) butane, bis - (2 - hydroxy - 3 - α - methylcyclohexyl - 5 - methylphenyl) methane, 2,6 - bis - (2<SP>1</SP> - hydroxy - 3<SP>1 </SP>- t - butyl - 5<SP>1</SP> - methylbenzyl) - 4 - methylphenol, a condensation product of 2,4-xylenol and nonaldehyde, a tris(hydroxyphenyl) propane compound prepared by the condensation of 1 mole of crotonaldehyde with 3 moles of 3-methyl-6-t-butylphenol, a tetrakis (hydroxyphenyl) butane compound prepared by the condensation of 1 mole of succindialdehyde with 4 moles of 3-methyl-6- t-butyl phenol, or a condensation product of mixed 2,4-/2,5-xylenols with butyraldehyde. The composition which may be in the form of an aqueous dispersion may also contain a diester of a sulphur containing dicarboxylic acid having the formula R 1 OOCR 3 SR 4 COOR 2 in which R 1 and R 2 are straight or branched chain alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or cycloalkyl groups or alkyl groups in which the chain is interrupted by oxygen or sulphur atoms and R 3 and R 4 are straight or branched chain alkylene, arylene, arylene alkylene, arylene alkylene arylene or alkylene arylene alkylene groups. The polyoxyalkylene groups of the crystallizable polymeric compound may be derived from a polyoxyalkylene glycol of average molecular weight 300-6000. The crystallizable polymeric compound may contain 10-50% by weight of ethylene terephthalate repeat units and 90- 50% by weight of polyoxyethylene terephthalate repeat units derived from polyoxyethylene glycol of average molecular weight 1000-4000, the molar ratio of ethylene terephthalate units to polyoxyethylene terephthalate units being between 2: 1 and 6: 1.
