Abstract

1,126,691. Sewing machines. W. J. CLARKSON Ltd. 1 Aug., 1967 [19 Sept., 1966], No. 41628/66. Heading DIG. A first part, to be stitched to another underlaid part o,r garment, is located between an upper retaining plate and a lower profiled shaping means, blade means move inwardly to fold the edge of the first part around the edge of and beneath the lower profiled shaping means, and the profiled shaping and the folding means are then withdrawn to leave the folded edge projecting beyond a profiled edge of the upper retaining plate for attachment to the underlaid part or garment along said profiled edge. The arrangement shown is for attaching a pocket blank to a garment, and comprises a retaining plate 2 formed with a slot 3 profiled to the shape of the pocket and having U- shaped ends 34. Brackets 19, fixed to the upper surface of plate 2, carry a spindle 20 for pivoting plate 2 to a work-supporting plate. A bar 16, slidable on plate 2 in recesses 18 formed in brackets 19, is secured at 15 to a pressure fluid cylinder 10, the piston rod 9 of which is secured to a bar 12 slidable in a recess 13 in plate 2. A flexible plate 7, shaped to the profile of slot 3, is slidable in a recess 8 formed in the lower surface of plate 2, and is secured at its rear end to bar 12 by screws 21 passing through a slot 22 in plate 2. Plate 7 may thereby be retracted to uncover slot 3, or advanced to cover slot 3 when the sides and forward end of plate 7 lie adjacent folding blades 23 and 24 respectively. The side blades 23 have upper extensions 23a secured to respective arms 27 pivoted at 28 to the upper surface of plate 2. The end blade 24 has an upper extension 24a rigid with bars 31 which are slidable on the upper surface of plate 2 and are connected by upright pins 30 to the free ends 32 of respective bars 17 rigid with bar 16. The pins 30 are disposed in cam slots 29 formed in the bars 27, whereby, when plate 7 is retracted, the folding blades are positioned outwardly of slot 3. To initiate a loading operation, plate 2 is raised, whereby the retracted plate 7 flexes downwardly about its rear edge to facilitate the positioning of a pocket blank thereupon. Piston 9 then advances plate 7, bar 16 remaining at the forward ends of recesses 18 until plate 7 is fully advanced, when magnets supported in an aperture 35 in plate 2 hold plate 7 against plate 2 and the edges of the blank overlapping slot 3 project downwardly from plate 7. Bar 16 then moves to the rearward ends of recesses 18, whereby the pins 30, acting on the cam slots 29, and directly on blade 24, move blades 23, 24 inwardly to fold the edges of the blank on to the under surface of plate 7. Plate 2 is then lowered to position the blank upon a garment located on the work-supporting plate, plate 7 is retracted, and stitching is carried out from one end to the other of slot 3. Guide pieces 37, located on plate 2 at the ends of slot 3, are engaged by a member on the sewing machine presser bar at the completion of stitching, whereby plate 2 may then be raised for the removal of completed work and lowered before stitching re-commences. The work-supporting plate is formed with a slot which is complementary to slot 3 and is engaged by a stationary guide roller through which the needle passes. For feeding the blanks mechanically on to plate 7, the blanks are placed on a plate which is slidably mounted on the work-supporting plate to reciprocate towards and away from plate 7, the front end of the blank-feeding plate being bevelled to allow plate 7 to ride thereupon for receiving the blank.
