1,126,647. Temperature responsive actuating elements. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 9, 1966 [Dec. 30, 1965] No. 50170/66. Heading G1D. [Also in Division H1] A thermally responsive switch element comprises a bi-metallic strip 12 carrying a contact 21, strip 12 including a plurality of integrally formed channel-defining portions 40, 42, 43 separated from each other by slits 38, 39 and spaced alternately in opposite directions from the top and bottom surfaces 36, 37 of the remainder of the strip 12, and on electrical heater 23 securely mounted in the channel, a first surface portion of heater 23 confronting the top surface 36 of strip 12 in one of the channel-defining portions 42, and a second surface portion of heater 23 confronting the bottom surface 37 of strip 12 in or adjacent one, 40, 43, of the channel-defining portions. The strip 12 is mounted in a switch, separated at one end 14 by insulating blocks from the end of a second limitable strip (13) carrying a contact (22) but no heater, the contacts 21, (22) normally engaged, but separated when strip 12 deflect in response to the energization of heater 23. Strip 12 and (13) both deflect equal distances in the same direction in response to changes of ambient temperature to maintain the contacts touching when heater 23 is not energized.
