Abstract

1,126,433. Particle accelerators; electro-magnets. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 20 June, 1966 [13 July, 1965], No. 27416/66. Headings H1D and H1P. The excitation coils of the electromagnets of an alternating- gradient proton synchrotron are wound in such fashion that connections may be made directly between the adjacent ends of successive magnets while maintaining an equal number of turns in all the coils. In the coil winding pattern shown in Fig. 4, for a group of four successive magnets 12, 13, 14, 15, each magnet comprising a two-layered coil encircling the upper and lower polepieces of a C-shaped laminated core and the entire winding comprising two circuits 36, 37, one being the series return circuit of the other, one coil layer b of each magnet comprises (three) complete turns and a partial turn connected in one circuit (12b, in circuit 36) and the complementary portion of the partial turn connected in the return circuit (12b, in circuit 37). The winding circuits 36, 37 are exactly balanced within the " coil window " 35 of each magnet but imbalance in each magnet as a whole is counteracted by the staggered arrangement of the winding pattern over the group of four magnets. Each coil layer is a rigid pre-formed subassembly comprising a liquid cooled hollow conductor of rectangular cross-section and the layer types a, b, c, d are distinguished by the kind and placement of terminals and by the presence or absence of a partial turn feedthrough member 26, Fig. 3. The magnet group comprises two pairs of focusing magnets 12, 13 and two pairs of defocusing magnets 14, 15 and the alternating gradient system may comprise quadrupole or sextupole magnets.
