Abstract
112,642. McEwen, W., and Robinson, W. May 11, 1917. Breaking and scutching apparatus; grip-chain, and like arrangements for feeding, holding, and conveying fibrous materials. - Breaking devices, beating and scutching devices, and a dressing device are all combined in one machine arranged on the principle of the automatic hackling-machine with changing and filling ends, and provision is made for passing the flax &c. through the machine in such a manner that both sides of the material are operated upon. The flax is placed in holders at the filling-end g of the machine, and is passed along the channel k in the usual manner. It is acted upon first by breaking devices a<1>, a<2>, a<3>, then by beating-devices b<1> - - - b<6>, and finally by a dressing-device c. Between the devices b<3> and b<4> is provided a turntable section k<1> of the channel operated by spring ratchet teeth on the reciprocating bar l which moves the holders. The material is then passed through the changing end h of the machine, and the untreated portion of the material is acted upon by similar devices as it is passed back along the other side of the machine. The breaking-device comprises toothed plates, one of which is pivoted at the lower end and operated by eccentrics n through rods n<1>, n<2>, the eccentrics being out of phase. To free the material, the other plate can be, moved about a pivot a<4> by an eccentric a<5> just before the holder is moved on. The beating and scutching devices comprise beaters b<7> set on drums and cooperating with curved stock plates. The dressing-device comprises a series of bars c<5> carried on endless bands and co-operating with a flat plate p. Instead of the system of holders and channels, the material may be held between belts supported in a channel, the devices being arranged alternately to act on opposite sides of the material, and a pullthrough device being provided to transfer the material to a second pair of belts to allow the untreated portion to be acted upon.
