In a lasting machine of the type in which the upper is tensioned about the last by grippers and is laid over the edge of the insole by wipers, the grippers release the upper when the wipers engage the grippers during their inwiping action to complete an electrical circuit which causes the gripper jaws to open. As described a lasting machine of the type described in Specification 1,010,149 includes two joint gripper units 32, 34, one at each side of the shoe, a pair of joint wipers 2 and an electrical control circuit (not shown) which causes the gripper jaws 32, 34 to open only when both wipers 2 are in contact with their associated gripper jaws 34. The gripper jaws 32, 34 are pivoted at 30 to an end portion of a cylinder 20 and are closed by the action of a wedge on the piston rod 42 which engages rolls 44 on the gripper jaws 32, 34. The gripper unit and cylinder 20 are carried on a piston rod 16 and are insulated therefrom by a collar 26 and bushes 24 of insulating material. A wire 82 connects the gripper unit to the electrical control circuit. The piston rod 16 has a piston 14 movable in a cylinder 12 which forms part 10 of a ball and socket joint 9. Actuation of cylinder 12 causes the grippers to lay the lasting margin of the upper U inwardly across the insole O. The grippers are lowered to tension the upper by the action of piston 52 and cylinder 50, the cylinder 50 being pivoted to the piston rod 16 and the piston rod 70 being pivoted to the bracket 6. The machine has an automatic control circuit and operates as follows:-when the lasting margin has been placed in the gripper jaws 32, 34 the jaws 32, 34 close and move downwardly under the action of piston and cylinder 50 to tension the upper. The jaws 32, 34 then move inwardly under the action of piston and cylinder 12 to lay the lasting margin against the insole I and the wipers 2 perform their inwiping . action. When both wipers 2 have contacted the jaws 34 to complete an electrical circuit a transistor (not shown) in the circuit becomes conductive and energizes a relay which in turn operates a solenoid operated valve to cause the jaws 32, 34 to open. The grippers then move to their inoperative position and the wipers complete their inwiping operation.
