To prevent rocking, a hexogonal manhole cover is composed of three substantially triangular plates 17, 18, 18 each having threepoint support in a frame 10, the three plates being loosely interconnected by bolts through depending flanges. The frame 10 comprises a flanged boundary wall 11, internal supports 32, 33, 34 for the cover plates, and opentopped recesses 36 for hinge lugs on the centre plate 17.
