In a tyre building machine two rotatable stitcher discs 8 are each guided and pressed with a pressure which increases as angle α increases, against the building drum 2 by associated mechanism including a cylinder 9 displaceable parallel to the drum axis and a cylinder 16 hinged at 22 to a link 20, the cylinders, roller and a throttled oil damper 31 being kinematically connected. Initially discs 8 are located adjacent the drum mid-plane. Pressure air is supplied to spaces a, b in the cylinders, the damper allowing link 20 to rise quickly. Drum 2 is rotated and cylinder 9 displaced axially of the drum until the disc reaches the drum shoulder, when pressure air is supplied to space c of cylinder 9, the damper slowing the movement which causes disc 8 to move upwards to stitch the shoulder.
