Abstract

1,125,828. Aerials. LIGNES TELEGRAPHIQUES ET TELEPHONIQUES. 28 Sept., 1966 [13 Oct., 1965], No. 43454/66. Heading H4A. A Luneberg type lens comprises a central sphere 7 surrounded by six shells 1 to 6, each made from the same expanded dielectric material, such as polystyrene or polyethylene of density 35 to 125 grams/dm<SP>3</SP>, which is loaded with different concentrations of a filler so that the equation may be approximated, where n = refractive index. d = distance from centre to point considered. R = outside radius. The expanded dielectric material for a shell is mixed with a paste of naturally oxidized non- conducting aluminium flakes of sizos 0À1 to 10 microns in a binder such as ethyl acetate containing a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl propionate, and is formed between inner and outer hemispherical moulds and made solid by heating. When assembling the shell, the two halves are put together so that the joint is at right angles to that of the previous shell. A thin outer cover or radome 8, also in two parts, and made of glass fibre, may be fitted over the shell 7 and have a protective coating 9 over its joint. The lens may be utilized as a reflector by providing metallization over a portion of its external surface.
