Abstract

1,124,933. Movable-band filters for liquids. M.E.L. EQUIPMENT CO. Ltd. 6 May, 1966 [11 June, 1965], No. 24760/65. Heading B1D. An apparatus for filtering liquids comprises a tank for receiving unfiltered liquid and having a wall with a liquid-pervious portion through which liquid can leave the tank, and a flexible sheet of filter medium incorporated in an endless assembly of interconnected parts which is movable in alternate directions along a closed path to move the filter medium into an operative position in which it extends over the liquid-pervious portion of the wall, and away from this position for the removal of foreign matter accumulated on the filter medium. As shown, a tank 1 has an inclined lower wall 2 with pervious portion 3 below which is a suction chamber 4 connected to a centrifugal pump 5. A flexible strip 6 of filter medium, e.g. paper, cloth, bonded fibre or the like, is attached at 32, 33, to a strip 7 of liquid-impervious fabric and extends along wall 3, 2 and over a roller 22 to bars 15, 16. Wire ropes 9 extend from the end of strip 7, and lie one each side of filter strip 6, passing over grooves (not shown) in the ends of roller 22, then around pulleys 13, 14; they are finally wound on, and secured to, drums 10 coaxial with a roller 8, on which strip 7 is wound and to which it is secured. The movable assembly is tensioned by a gravity-loaded roller 23. When it is required to remove accumulated foreign matter from a filter medium, the pump 5 is stopped, and a handle 12 secured to roller 8 and drums 10 is turned clockwise. The filter strip is thus moved up along portion 3 followed by strip 7, the filter strip being scraped clean by a scraper 34. Handle 12 is then turned in the reverse direction. Pump 5 may be started and stopped by a switch operated by a member rotatable with the shaft 11 of handle 12.
