Abstract

Acrylic or methacrylic monomers are stabilized with a minor proportion of an N-alkyl pyrrole, e.g. N-methyl pyrrole. Acrylic or methacrylic acids are stabilized and may be esterified in the presence of the stabilizer to the alky acrylates or methacrylates or interacted with alkylene oxides, e.g. ethylene or propylene oxide to form 2-hydroxyalkyl acrylates. The stabilizers may also be present during the purification by distillation of the acrylic and methacrylic acids. Other stabilizers such as hydroquinone, alkylphenols and alkoxyphenols, e.g. 4-methoxyphenol may also be present.
