Abstract
1,124,828. Refractory moulds. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 6 Oct., 1966 [30 Nov., 1965], No. 50696/65. Heading B5A. In a process for the production of refractory moulds to be used for casting metals, a pattern is coated with a slurry of binding agent and refractory filler, the pattern being vibrated during at least part of the coating operation. The binding agent may contain silica and is preferably a solution of a hydrolysed organic silicate or a silica sol. The pattern is preferably coated by dipping and vibrated while still submerged, preferably for 40-80 seconds at a frequency of preferably 30-2000 c.p.s. and an amplitude of preferably 0À010-0À030 inch. Mechanical contact between vibrating means and pattern is preferably established before vibrating or while the amplitude is < 0À001 inch, the amplitude thereafter being increased to the level desired. Several coatings each of slurry and stuces are usually applied, vibration being effected during at least the first two slurry-coating operations. The apparatus may have means for varying the amplitude of vibration and for adjusting the depth of the pattern within the slurry bath.
