Abstract
In the solvent recovery of acetylene from gaseous acetylene-containing mixtures, e.g. a cracked gas obtained by partial combustion of natural gas with oxygen, the deposition of polymeric contaminants on to equipment surfaces is alleviated by adding to the solvent as an anti-fouling agent an effective soluble amount of either an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkali metal salt of an acid having a maximum dissociation constant for the first hydrogen atom of 10-4. The effective amount of the agent is usually in the range 10-600 p.p.m., the optimum amount varying from one agent to another and from one solvent to another. Suitable agents are NaOH, KOH, Li2CO3. K2CO3, Na2CO3, NaHCO3, KHCO3, sodium acetate, sodium stearate, sodium oleate and sodium succinate. Suitable solvents, which preferably contain small amounts of water to assist in the dissolution of the anti-fouling agents, are dimethyl formamide, butyrolactone, and N-methyl pyrrolidone.
