Abstract

1,124,541. Cooling systems. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 6 Jan., 1967 [7 Jan., 1966], No. 979/67. Heading F4U. A closed condensation-evaporation cooling system includes a heater 16 for causing additional evaporation of the coolant, and means 26-32 for sensing the vapour pressure in the system and controlling the heater to maintain said pressure, and hence the system temperature, substantially constant. As shown, the system comprises a chamber 8 which is heated by gamma radiation from a nuclear reactor, a riser leg 10, a cooler 12, a receiver 4 for condensed coolant and a downcomer leg 6 for supplying condensate to chamber 8. The vapour pressure is measured in the vapour space of receiver 4; 16 is a resistance heater and the coolant is helium, nitrogen, hydrogen, argon or neon. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), legs 6 and 10 are coaxial and surrounded by a jacket, the system being partially immersed in the water of a swimming pool reactor. Means are described for filling, evacuating and emptying the system. The system may alternatively be used to dissipate heat caused by neutron radiation or by the specimen immersed in the liquid coolant.
